ACROSS THE SURLY BRINE by Dieter Carlton
From whisper to a gentle roar,
The winds would dash the waves ashore.
The smell of salt would fill the air,
As gulls would greet the lighthouse there.
Along the rocky coast in stride,

And in the distance, ships would sway,
But none indeed should drift astray
As long as there my lamp will shine
Its beam ACROSS THE SURLY BRINE.

This is a very cool image. I like the detail, the flinty greyness of the waves and the 'unconventional' placement of the horizon and beam of light

Lordy, what a gorgeous work of art! This has to be one of my all-time favorites of every image I've seen on FAA. Your lovely poem reminds me of James Russell Lowe's poem "Columbus" - here's the opening: "The cordage creaks and rattles in the wind, With whims of sudden hush; the reeling sea Now thumps like solid rock beneath the stern..." Lowe too used "surly" and "brine" but not together, as you have, for a perfect word picture.
