Artist's Description
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 "Phantom" II was arguably among the most effective and versatile fighter aircraft of the 20th century. Developed in 1960 as an all-weather attack platform for the U.S. Navy and later, also the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corp, the F-4 "Phantom" became notable for its success against Soviet-made MiG's during the Vietnam Conflict. It also served to a limited extend during the Persian Gulf War of 1991, but was eventually replaced by the F-14 "Tomcat". Despite the F-4 "Phantom's" success as a fighter aircraft, its large size conjured for it a litany of unflattering nicknames like "Rhino", "Double-Ugly", "Iron Pig", "Flying Brick", "Flying Footlocker", etc. I hope you enjoy this acrylic painting of a pair of F-4 "Phantom" jets over the Mekong River, Vietnam by Dieter Carlton, himself a veteran U.S. military pilot.
