Description
The amazing AV-8B "Harrier" jump jet combines the VSTOL (Vertical and Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities of a helicopter and the high-speed effectiveness of a fighter jet in one highly sophisticated and formidable aircraft. Evolving originally from the Hawker Siddeley P.1127, the AV-8B was produced in 1983 by a joint effort between McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) and British Aerospace (BAE Systems) for the United States Marine Corp. A variant predecessor of the AV-8B was the Hawker-Siddeley "Sea Harrier" made famous during the Falkland island war. For those who have never witnessed the performance of this extraordinary aircraft, it is much like watching an alien spacecraft, if such a thing exists, as it lifts to a stationary hover at some 40 to 100 feet above the ground. The appearance of this aircraft, as well as its loud, howling engine sounds, is enough to take one's breath away. I hope you enjoy this image of a group of AV-8B "Harriers" performing a carrier landing, a 3D digital composition created by Dieter Carlton, himself a veteran U.S. Army, combat helicopter pilot.
