Among the most controversial cultures of ancient Europe was a fierce society of explorers, warriors, merchants and pirates known as the Vikings. On the contrary, however, the Vikings were great explorers, traders and merchant marines, who, although fierce and fearless in battle, were an otherwise gentle and honorable culture. As a result of their courageous water explorations and uncanny navigation skills, the Vikings discovered and mapped most of the North Atlantic and brought many important discoveries to the rest of the world, most notably, their extraordinary ship-building skills.
