Description
The mighty Boeing AH-64 "Apache" helicopter, now the primary attack helicopter of the United States Army aviation arsenal, is among the most feared aircraft in the world. In spite of the "Apache's" rather intimidating reputation, its development since 1975 was humble at best. Manufactured originally by Hughes, early versions of this helicopter did not quite measure up to the standards of its sleek and sexy predecessor, the Bell AH-1 "Cobra". In fact, many of the Vietnam era pilots railed on it for its sluggish performance, comparing it in terms of maneuverability to the Bell UH-1 "Huey". After years of polish and redesign, most notably by McDonnell Douglas and Boeing (both eventually merging to become The Boeing Company), the "Apache" evolved into a highly impressive, extremely formidable instrument of modern aerial warfare. I hope you enjoy this acrylic painting by Dieter Carlton, himself a former U.S. Army helicopter pilot
