Description
This work is dedicated to my old army buddy Ken Bennett. He and I were pilots assigned to the 4th Squadron, 9th U.S. Cavalry, 6th Air Cavalry Combat Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas. Depicted are a pair of army helicopters in NOE (Nap of the Earth) tactical configuration. The foreground helicopter is a UH-1H Iroquois, commonly referred to as the "Huey". In the background is the OH-58A Kiowa, light observation or "Aero-Scout" helicopter. NOE flight is challenging in two respects. First is that pilots must fly as close to the ground as vegetation and terrain permit and maneuver often at speeds over 100 miles per hour. Second is that navigation requires advanced knowledge of the target terrain or, a co-pilot who must quickly interpret terrain maps in flight and direct the pilot accordingly.
